Abstract
This issue of the “Abhandlungen” of “Neues Jahrbuch für Mineralogie” contains selected papers from the International Symposium on Thallium Chemistry, Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Ores and Environmental Problems organized in honor of Prof. Dr. Günther Moh from Heidelberg. The symposium on thallium which took place in June 1992 in Belgrade, was held to present the most recent results obtained in the field of applied and pure science concerning this extremly interesting but relatively rare and toxic metal. Polymetallic ore deposits of low temperature origin almost always contain thallium. In general, low concentrations of this heavy and toxic metal can hardly be extracted. Although numerous thallium minerals are described, their parageneses and equilibria have not been adequately investigated. Constantly increasing interest in new materials has focused the attention of scientific circles to thallium as well. Protection of nature from toxic metals, including thallium, has certainly imposed new questions and opened new problems that require considerable attention of scientists. One of the first scientists who was courageous enough to begin with thorough and comprehensive research work covering this metal was Prof. Dr. Günter Moh from the Mineralogical and Petrographical Institute, Faculty of Geosciences, University of Heidelberg. His contribution to this particular scientific field is enormous and represents the basis for further investigations on thallium, its chemistry, geochemistry, mineralogy, ores and environmental problems. Under supervision of Prof. Moh numerous eminent scientists were gathered together. They are nowadays engaged with this problem in their own laboratories all over the world, where important investigations have been carried out. The preparation of the Thallium Symposium was initiated already some years ago, and it was our special privilege to organize the International Symposium in honor of Prof. Dr. Günter Moh and to award to him a “DIPLOMA ON HONORARY MEMBERSHIP” of the Association of Mining, Geological and Metallurgical Engineers and Technicians of Yugoslavia for his scientific and research work in the field of experimental study of multi-component phase systems originating from nature, as well as for his distinguished contributions to the development of cooperation between scientific institutions in Germany and Yugoslavia, particularly between the Faculty of Geosciences in Heidelberg and the Faculty of Mining and Geology in Belgrade.
