Abstract

The beginning of solar neutrino experimental physics was marked by the famous preprint of Pontecorvo (1946). It should be noted, that it was written when the Fermi theory of beta decay was not yet in its final form. It was still ten years before the first observation of the interactions of free neutrinos. It had been stated at that time that an inverse beta decay process produced by neutrinos cannot be observed due to the low yield. However, Pontecorvo suggested a method which made an experimental observation of this process feasible. The main theme of Pontecorvo’s idea was that the radioactivity of the produced nucleus may be looked for as a proof of the inverse beta process. The essential point is that radioactive atoms produced by an inverse beta process have different chemical properties from the irradiated atoms. In this fundamental paper, even such a practical thing as the addition of a carrier to separate the radioactive atoms from the irradiated materials was suggested.
