Abstract
A description is given of the GALLEX experiment for the detection of solar neutrinos by means of a radiochemical gallium detector. This detector is operated by groups from Italy, France, Germany, Israel and the U.S.A, in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory in Italy. It consists of the target tank containing 101 t of GaCl3 solution, a sparging system for desorption of GeCl4, the absorption system for concentration of GeCl4, the laboratory scale apparatus for conversion of GeCl4 to GeH4, the counter filling station, and, finally, the counters. Possible side reactions are mentioned interfering with the neutrino measurement. The purification of the target solution from long-lived, cosmogenic 68Ge by sparging under heating is discussed. Finally, the first, preliminary result after one year of solar neutrino measurement is mentioned, as well as an outlook given to the continuing measurements including a calibration experiment with a 51Cr-source.
