Abstract

Pelitic schists (garnet-mica schists) in the Caledonian pyritic lead-zinc mine at Bleikvassli, North Norway, display a variety of folding styles at different levels of the mine (rocks being of the same lithostratigraphic unit). They are (a) tight isoclinal folds, (b) chevron folds, (c) open parallel folds, (d) polyclinal and conjugate folds and (e) cleavage folds. Samples from the hinge zone of these folds are analysed for major elements. Chemistry shows that the folds can be grouped into two major divisions — (1) tight folds rich in low-density elements and (2) open folds showing a concentration of high-density elements. The influence of chemistry on the styles of folding is discussed in the light of rheological behaviour of rocks.
