(Pt,Pd) (Bi,Sb), a new mineral

Tarkian, M.; Stumpfl, E. F.

Abstract

A new mineral, (Pt,Pd) (Bi,Sb) has been discovered in platinum concentrates from the Driekop Mine, Transvaal, S. Africa. Spectral reflectance: R470=49.7—55.7, R546 = 56.2—62.0, R589 = 59.4—66.4 and R650 = 62.6—69.0. VHN15.25 = 301—352. Electron probe microanalysis gives Pt 36.7, Pd 10.7, Bi 32.1, Sb 16.2, As 4.4 and Sn 0.8%. The small grainsize (maximum 35 μ) and complex intergrowths with other platinum minerals have precluded X-ray investigation. The intense anisotropy and comparison with the binary end members PtSb, PtBi and the intermediate phase Pt (Sb, Bi), stumpflite, suggest that the new mineral has also hexagonal symmetry and NiAs-type structure.
