Abstract

The early description of rézbányite (Frenzel, 1883) and redefinition of its chemical composition (Johansson, 1924; Koch, 1930) are disscussed. Discreditation of Johansson’s (1924) and various other rézbányites based on a determined relationship to the bismuthinite derivatives was proposed in later papers by Welin (1966) and Harris & Chen (1976). Mumme & Žák (1985) and Žák et al. (1992) restudied Băița Bihorului (Rézbánya) and Ocna de fier (Vaskö) materials and found them to be heterogeneous mixtures of predominantly bismuthinite derivatives. The Băița Bihorului rézbányite studied, dated 1874, is probably very similar to Frenzel’s original material; the Ocna de fier rézbányite represents a holotype or cotype of Koch’s material. The results in Žák et al. (1992) were submitted as a formal proposal for discreditation of rézbányite to IMANMMN. Discreditation was approved in January 1993.
