The Genus Frullania subgenus Frullania in Latin America
Stotler, Raymond E.
Abstract
This study includes an historical sketch of the genus Frullania, a detailed treatment of the morphology and development of Frullania, a discussion of the cytology, and a systematic treatment. The systematic treatment includes a detailed description and discussion of the gęnus Frullania and the subgenera Frullania, Chonanthelia, Trachycolea, Homotropantha, Meteoriopsis, Diastaloba, and Saccophora. A key of these seven subgenera and a key to the Latin American species of the subgenus Frullania is provided. Each species of the subgenus Frullania is described in detail and the synonyms from among the Latin American taxa are included. A discussion of the distinguishing characters follows each species description along with habitat data and a distributional list complied from the specimens examined. Each species is illustrated with a habit sketch and drawings of the other distinguishing characters. A discussion of possible phylogenetic relationships, a list of species not available for study, and a list of species excluded from the subgenus Frullania is provided. A total of 124 species, 20 varieties, and two forms of Latin American Frullania’s are treated in this work. Of these, 15 species were not available for study. Of the remaining 109 species, 68 are reduced to synonymy and 10 are transfered to other subgenera leaving 31 species her described.
