Abstract
The dinoflagellate cyst content of intertidal sediment samples from the British Isles has been investigated by palynological techniques. 16 species of Gonyaulacacean cysts were recognised, 13 of which are recorded here in Recent sediment from the British Isles for the first time. 2 new genera, 5 new species and 3 new combinations are described. The distributions of these Gonyaulacacean cysts around the British Isles is outlined and discussed in relation to environmental variables such as water masses and currents. Comparisons are made to the known occurrence of British motile dinoflagellates and to previous records of dinoflagellate cysts in Recent sediment. Current difficulties in the classification of dinoflagellates are outlined and a suggestion is made that a dual system of nomenclature should be utilized for dinoflagellate cyst and motile stages.
