Abstract

Descriptions are given from examination by both light and scanning electron microscopy of 16 taxa of diatom from the sediments of Lake Ontario. Details of pore, sulcus and spine structure are shown in Melosira islandica O. Müll, and Melosira italica O. Müll. Structural details are described for 8 taxa of Cyclotella} C. atomus Hust., C. glomerata Bachm., C. bodanica Eulenst., C. comta (Ehrb.) Kz., C. kuetzingiana Thwaites, C. kuetzingiana var. radiosa Fricke, C. ocellata Pantocsek, and C. stelligera Cl. et Grun. Six taxa of Stephanodiscus are described. S. rotula (Kuetz.) Hendey, S. rotula var minutula (Kuetz.) Grun., S. hantzschii Grun., S. niagarea Ehrb., S. niagarae var. magnifica Fricke and S. tenuis Hust. The relationship between the internal and external valve architecture is shown for some species of both Cyclotella and Stephanodiscus. Essential differences between these two genera, particularly in relation to spine and pore structure, is discussed.
