Abstract

An investigation was made on the freshwater algae occurring in dune slacks, springs and the shore of a lake in Newborough Warren, Anglesey, Great Britain. Samples were collected monthly from 12 stations during October 1960 - February 1962. Altogether 798 taxa were recorded 51% of which were first records for Anglesey and Caernarvonshire. A new taxon, Nitzschia sinuata, var. denticuloides Biswas was found to occur in some springs. The class Bacillariophyceae or diatoms had 63% of the taxa. This was followed bv Chlorophyceae or green algae having 17%, Cyanophyceae or blue-green algae 12%, Euglenophyceae 4%, Dinophyceae 2%, Xanthophyceae 1 %, Chrysophyceae and Cryptophyceae together 1 %. About 78% of the taxa occurred in all habitats. Some 19% of the taxa were restricted to dune slacks and springs, 12% of which were green and 5% blue-green algae. About 3% were restricted to the lake shore of which 2% were diatoms. Almost 91 % of the taxa occurred throughout the year thus showing the lack of seasonal changes. A number of algae, especially the diatoms, were northern types which could survive the relatively mild winter of the west coast of Great Britain and hence no seasonal changes. Almost 37% of the total number of taxa recorded in Newborough Warren was known for Anglesey and Caernarvonshire. Diatoms dominated the former area while the green algae, especially the desmids the latter. Newborough Warren dune area covers less than 1 % of the total area of Anglesey and Caernarvonshire. The inclusion of the new reocrds from the former enriched the algal flora of the latter by 19%. This has also decreased the proportion of green algae from 47 to 42% and increased that of diatoms from 33 to 40%. No such changes were observed in the other classes of algae.
