Abstract
A species of Basidiobolus isolated from lizard dung is reported for the first time. Its mycelium has a strong tendency to form hyphal bodies which initiate formation of smooth-walled zygospores. Globose conidium arises from the slender conidiophore which may either develop from the aerial hyphae or mature zygospores. The primary conidium is then forcibly discharged when most of the protoplasmic contents fill the propulsive swelling beneath the conidium. The discharged conidium produces either secondary conidium or can germinate to form the initial hyphal bodies. Proliferation of conidial production was also observed; from a less differentiated secondary conidium, a smaller tertiary conidium without any propulsive swelling at the base, is formed at the tip of the conidiophore. The isolate under study did not conform with any of the reported species of Basidiobolus and henceforth named B. philippinensis sp. nov.
