Abstract
A collection of brown algae was brought together by Schiffner for distribution in “Kryptogamae exsiccatae editae a Mus. Hist. Nat. Vindobon”. This collection contained a number of Cystoseiras in which a few seemed to be new species bearing Schiffnerian provisional names. This material was kindly given to the authors for further studies on the genus Cystoseira. After detailed studies the authors are of opinion that these are new species which have never been published in any form. So it was thought necessary to publish these four new species - Cystoseira epiphytica, C. funkii, C. pycnoclada and C. sicula. The authors have retained the provisional names of these species given by Schiffner and ascribe the species to him.
