Abstract
The present investigation comprised 185 soil samples from uncultivated and 142 from cultivated localities. Ninety-eight resp. seventy-four strains of Saprolegniaceae were isolated together with one strain of Leptomitaceae and one of Blastocladiaceae. Generally the fungi were isolated from the upper soil layers, and representatives could be found at depths down to 80-100 cm. They were isolated throughout the year. The fungi were divided into two groups, group A containing genera of which several species are known from fresh waters as well as from the soil (Pythiopsis, Saprolegnia, Protoachlya, Achlya, Dictyuchus, Apodachlya) and group B comprising genera which chiefly or exclusively are known from soil samples (Thraustotheca, Brevilegnia, Geolegnia, Aplanopsis, Allomyces). 28% of the isolates belonged to group A, and 72% to group B. Most of the isolates from moist soil samples taken near waters in uncultivated localities belonged to group A, while the majority isolated from moist samples of cultivated soil belonged to group B. Generally, the frequency of the fungi decreased with the increasing distance from waters, and members of group A constantly became less common than those of group B.
