Abstract

A new species of Dictyopteris, D. jolyana, is proposed based on material from east and southeast coasts of Brazil. The species resembles the American Atlantic D. justii Lamour., in gross morphology but can be easily distinguished on the basis of anatomy since the new species has up to 7 layers of medullary cells compared to the 2 cell layers of D. justii. It is also close to D. fucoides Tan. from Japan, from which it can be distinguished by the presence of sterile cells between the oogonia which are also smaller and grouped in smaller sori.
