Abstract

Cells of Euglena tristella Chu were examined in transmission electron microscope with special attention to the organization and structure of the chloroplast and the so called paramylon centres. It was shown that the fine structure of the flagellar apparatus, pellicle complex, nucleus, Golgi bodies, and mitochondria exhibit the usual structures recorded in other Euglena species. Ultrathin sections cut through the “paramylon centres” revealed that Euglena tristella have three star-shaped chloroplasts, consisting of a large number of ribbon-shaped, densely packed fringed and branched lobes, radiating from true central pyrenoids. The pyrenoid matrix is relatively small, polygonal, traversed by double thylakoids and obscured by a number of paramylon granules surrounding the pyrenoid, and therefore not detectable by means of light microscopy.
