Abstract
A study of the silicoflagellates using both light and electron microscopy was carried out using 24 net surface samples and 71 water samples (250 cc) collected with Van Dorn bottles, in a range between 2 to 20 m water depths from Coliumo Bay (36°32’S; 72°57’W) and 24 net surface samples from Concepcion Bay (36°40’S; 73°01’W), Chile. Two species and three varieties were determinated. Two of these varieties: Distephanus speculum var. octonarius (Ehr.) Jorgensen and D. speculum var. polyactis (Ehr.) Lemmermann, are reported for the first time for Chile. Abnormalities of the observed siliceous skeleton are also reported.
