Abstract

Eight species of Mucorales belonging to seven genera and four families were isolated and identified. Five types of soils which included humus, clayey, sandy, sandy to clayey, and grey to bluish grey complex soils were sampled. Only Rhizopus stolonifer was isolated from a depth below 10 cm. Absidia spinosa, Mucor hiemalis and Congronella butleri exist only in soils with high moisture content while Cunninghamella elegans and Rhizopus stolonifer were isolated from practically all types of soil examined. There was no specific distribution of the Mucorales within the different soil types and soil reaction appears to have no effect on the distribution.
