Abstract

Examination of 245 species in 30 genera of Lejeuneaceae subfamily Lejeuneoideae reveals that eight branch characters are taxonomically important at some level: growth habit, ramification pattern, gynoecial position, innovation presence, innovation number, innovation vigor relative to Lejeunea-type branches, innovation leaf sequence, and inflorescence pattern. The disposition of these characters is discussed for each genus. Innovation leaf sequence, gynoecial position, innovation presence, innovation vigor and inflorescence pattern are more conservative characters at the generic level than are the remaining three. Although often useful taxonomically at the generic level, branch characters do not contribute greatly to an understanding of supergeneric interrelationships within the subfamily.
