Abstract

The genus Dipyrenis Clem. was introduced for Pyrenula-like species with 1-septate ascospores. Examination of the type material of the only species of the genus, D. brachysperma (Müll. Arg.) Clem., suggested that the name was based on effete ascomata of a probably non-lichenized fungus invaded by an unidentified dematiaceous hyphomycete with brown 1-septate ellipsoid conidia. The name must consequently be treated as of uncertain application. A description and illustrations of the type material are provided.
