Abstract

During the course of a study on aquatic fungi of cultivated soils of Tarai region of Naini Tai, India, a number of soil samples collected from various localities have been examined for the presence of these fungi. Apart from many species of Saprolegniaceae isolated, soil samples collected from some fields of Khatima (Naini Tai) during October and November 1980, were the sources of the new species of Saprolegnia described here. Sterilized hempseed halves placed in the soil suspension were covered with the fungal mycelium within 24-36 hours. For further examination, unifungal bacteria free cultures were prepared in the usual manner and fifteen successive generations were studied. Zoosporangial renewal by basipetal or cymose branching and the behaviour of discharging zoospores which immediately swim away in the cultures suggested that this fungus belongs to the genus Saprolegnia, This species of Saprolegnia which is apparently not identical with any member of this genus hitherto described.
