Abstract
The mucopolysaccharidic composition of the amorphous layer overlying the upper cortex in 46 specimens of Parmelia and Punctelia is shown by histochemical techniques. Its differentiation from the interhyphal matrix allows the two genera to be distinguished. The uncertain status of Punctelia canaliculata is outlined.
