Abstract
Samples collected at various locations along the Dutch North Sea coast between 1973 and 1986 were found to contain Anorthoneis excentrica (Donkin) Grunow and two other Anorthoneis species that could not be equated to the taxa described until then and have been described as A. vortex and A. pulex in a previous publication (Sterrenburg 1987). Some samples contained large Anorthoneis populations permitting an investigation into the frustule morphology. Although Anorthoneis shows a resemblance to Cocconeis, there are morphological differences distinguishing these two genera. Especially, the silicate bridges between valve and valvocopula characteristic for Cocconeis are absent.
