Abstract
The present communication deals with the systematic account of 51 taxa of desmids belonging to 13 genera viz. Gonatozygon De Bary, Penium Brébisson, Closterium Nitzsch, Pleurotaenium Nägeli, Euastrum Ehrenberg, Micrasterias Agardh, Actinotaenium (Nägeli) Teiling, Cosmarium Corda, Xanthidium Ehrenberg, Staurodesmus Teiling, Staurastrum Meyen, Hyalotheca Ehrenberg and Demidium Agardh collected from different localities of Kerala state. Of these, Euastrum horikawae Hinode, Cosmarium triundulatum Krieger, Staurodesmus mucronatus (Ralfs) Croasdale, Staurastrum anatinum Cook et Wills var. controversum (Bréb.) Brook, S. limneticum Schmidle var. limneticum and S. stelliferum Borge var. laeve Scott et Croasdale are new to India, and all the taxa are reported for the first time from Kerala.
