Abstract
Closterium subscoticum Gutwinski ranks among the rare species of the genus Closterium (Conjugatophyceae, Desmidiales). Its taxonomic characters are incompletely known (formation of girdle bands, sculpture of cell wall, habitat preference). By means of abundant material of this alga from Eglsee, a small lake near Abtenau (Austria), the author ascertained the following: 1) Closterium subscoticum Gutw. is a well defined species (especially characterized by the shape of the apical region). 2) Girdle bands are present. 3) Cell wall is striate with 13-15 striae per 10µm. 4) The alga is acidophilous (ph 5.5-6.6).
