Abstract

The phylloplane fungi on leaves of Ilex aquifolium were isolated quantitatively from one to four year old leaves. The fungal flora exhibited a marked increase in species and individuals during the life span of the leaves. Distinct differences in the colonisation were found between leaves collected in the City of Berlin-West, characterized by a high air pollution and those from Bad Pyrmont, Lower Saxonia, F. R. Germany with better air quality. The question of an Ilex-specific phylloplane flora is discussed.
