Abstract

A survey of 165 soil and vegetation samples collected from various sites of Varanasi has shown that nematohagous fungi occur in a variety of habitats. 31 predatory and 11 endoparasitic species were isolated. All the habitats were classified into one of 6 broad habitat types. Of these, cultivated land had the highest incidence of nematophagous fungi (92.7%) compared with rotting wood which had the lowest incidence (46.7%). Monacrosporium eudermatum was the most frequent in different habitats. Among endoparasites, Harposporium lilliputanum, H. cycloides, Myzocytium humicola and M. papillatum were commonly encountered. Net forming species were the most abundant and non-constricting rings were scarce among all trapping mechanisms.
