Abstract

A recent paper by J. A. Hart proposes that the fern rusts are the most advanced Uredinales, and consequently that the ferns are the most modern plants. Examination of his assumptions and of the grading of his characters indicates some of the weaknesses of his conceptions. This study at least illustrates anew that faulty data can make a disaster of a cladistic analysis however good the methodology may be. The approximate ages of origins of some plant groups are indicated.
