Abstract

Platycaulis Schust. (with only P. renifolius Schust.), a monotype known only from montane rain forests in the Andes of Venezuela is analyzed. It shows some affinities to Leptoscyphus Mitt., as, e. g., in the infuscated color; coarse trigones; the bifid underleaves. It is distinct from this, and nearly all other genera of Geocalycaceae subf. Leptoscyphoideae in: (1) the strikingly laterally compressed gametophyte; (2) asymmetrically reniform leaves, conspicuously decurrent dorsally, nearly longitudinally inserted; (3) the rhizoids, maximally dentritically divided at their apices, in fascicles from underleaf bases; (4) the free underleves. Similarly compressed gametophytes occur only in Evansianthus Schust. & Inoue, but this genus differs in the combination of Andrewsianthus- and Frullania-type branching; in the green color; largely polystratose leaves and very small underleaves.
