Abstract

This is an anatomical study of the brown alga Laminaria ochroleuca. We analyze the tissues observed in the different parts of the sporophyte of the alga: hapteron, stipe and lamina. The results of these observations reveal an increase in thickness of the tissues, size of the cortical cells and in number of mucilage ducts, along with the size of the sporophytes. The distribution and abundance of mucilage ducts and of pits differs in hapteron, stipe and lamina. Finally, because of the absence of mucilage ducts in the stipes of some of the specimens examined, we discuss the validity of the presence-absence character of mucilage ducts in the taxonomy of the European digitate members of the genus Laminaria.
