Abstract

Arthopyrenia aloës Kainz, Aptroot & Triebel, a new fungus from Namibia, growing on bark of Aloe dichotoma Masson, is described as new to science. The species is characterized by a conspicuous habit, of dark concentric spots on the silver-coloured bark of the host plant. A. aloës has features close to members of the genera Arthopyrenia A. Massal. and Didymella Sacc. Its generic placement is discussed and similarities to Stigmidium Trevis. are pointed out. A. aloës is regarded as a member of the genus Arthopyrenia, mainly because of its ascus and ascospore features and the presence of both periphyses and cellular pseudoparaphyses.
