Abstract

Two species of ascomycetes growing on Polytrichadelphus (Polytrichales, Musci) from the Ecuadorian Andes are described as new. The relatively large ascomata of the dothidealean Epibryon andinum develop between or on the leaf lamellae of P. purpureus. The species is characterized by relatively large ascomata, short, bent and irregular setae, two-celled ascospores that produce phialides, and biotrophic parasitism. Rogellia triseptata (Ostropales) infects P. purpureus and P. aristatus. It forms inconspicuous ascomata completely immersed within the abaxial leaf nerve and subcylindrical to needle-shaped four-celled ascospores. These polytrichicolous fungi are the first ascomycetes known on their corresponding hosts and the first bryophilous ascomycetes from Ecuador.
