Abstract

Coloured snow fields in the Sierra Nevada Mountains (Spain) were studied, and thirty two cryoseston samples were collected from the central region of these mountains, on the southern slopes of Mulhacen and the northern slopes of Pico de Veleta (altitudes from ca 2500 m above sea level). Of the cryoseston, we report 3 species of algae and 5 species of fungi. The green alga Chlamydomonas cf. nivalis dominated the majority of snowfields whereas Chloromonas nivalis prevailed in the majority of other localities. Chloromonas brevispina was also recorded but was rarely dominant. Fungi were represented by Selenotila nivalis, cf. Rhodosporidium toruloides, Alternaria sp., cf. Myzocytium and cf. Cochlonema verrucosum. Species that are common in the snowfields of European mountains, including genera such as Koliella, Stichococcus etc. and the fungus Chionaster nivalis, were absent.
