Abstract

The author gives essential examples of the origin and development of phytosociological terms. In 1835 already, Oswald Heer recognised the importance of fidelity of species to different habitats. Long after 1900, the relative importance attachted to physiognomic, ecological and floristic viewpoints still fluctuated considerably. In 1909, Gradmann discussed sociological notions. In 1910 Flahault and Schroeter proposed definitions in geobotanical nomenclature. In 1913 Braun-Blanquet emphasized the role of fidelity and placed it over that of dominance and constancy.
