Abstract
The increasingly intensive exploitation of our planet and its resources, and the increasing necessity to maintain and protect the environment in which we live, means that the geosciences are becoming even more important for solving the associated problems. Consequently, the geosciences must improve public understanding that reliable predictions and concepts for the future of our planet require targeted research into geological processes, events and history.
