Abstract

Large outcrops have been opened in the Swiss Midlands over the past 60 years through aggregate mining to meet the growing demand from construction. Almost all such excavations have taken place in Quaternary deposits and brought many scientifically valuable documents to our attention. As extraction of the material took place under strict economic schedules, scientific monitoring and sampling has been restricted in most cases to very small time windows. The wonderful exception of the rule is the Thalgut site where legally protected status as geotop has been granted to the last interglacial (= Eemian) part of the section.
