Abstract
I wrote a paper about “some aspects“ of silcrete, clearly stating it was not a comprehensive review, and neither was it meant to cite all previous work. My friends Young, Twidale & Hutton have essentially written a paper on “some more aspects” of silcrete, with reference to my earlier points. Some differences between us are just differences of opinion: some (like the explosiveness of silcrete boulders in a fire) are susceptible to experiment; but a few points require a response from me. Young’s paper of 1985 implies lateral migration of silica, but I can’t find a clear statement in his work stressing its importance. But if lateral movement has been noted, why the objection to my account of enrichment at the edge of valley-fill alluvium? Incidentally, I did not suggest that silcrete is preferentially developed at the margins of basaltic flows, but at the margins of the alluvium.
