Abstract

Ollier claims that the silcrete occurrences of eastern Australia may be genetically related to the basalt extrusions that are widely distributed in the region. Young & McDougall (1982) specifically examined the alleged genetic association of silcrete and basalt and concluded that the relationship is stratigraphic rather than genetic. At Ulladulla, southeastern NSW silicified sediments occur beneath a sheet of basalt but the sediments were further silicified and then eroded prior to the volcanic extrusion. The suggestion that silcrete is developed only or preferentially at the margins of basaltic flows does not find support in the field. For instance a thick silcrete underlies the entire basaltic capping - and is well exposed in quarries - near Pattimore Lagoon, near Ulladulla, NSW (Callendar 1978, Young & McDougall 1982).
