2021 Meteorological Wall and Postcard Calendars
The 2021 Meteorological Calendar thematically focuses on the so called “atmospheric boundary layer”, the bottommost layer (500–2000 m above ground level) of the troposphere that directly overlies the Earth’s surface. Its exact thickness depends among other factors, on the roughness of the Earth’s surface, the vertical temperature distribution and wind speed; on average it is about 1000 m thick. Most people spend more than 99 % of their lifetime in this „atmospheric boundary layer“ without ever knowing it.
The boundary layer is thus part of our everyday life; familiar weather phenomena such as fog, dew or “fair weather clouds” occur here. Air quality also depends on the conditions in the boundary layer.
The texts on the reverse sides of the calendar pages aim to acquaint you with some fundamental aspects, as well as several special features of the boundary layer and its importance to us all.
The calender images will take you on a meteorological journey into the mountains, where special flows may develop close to the ground, and should you ever have difficulty getting to sleep at night, you may want to reflect, e.g. on the nightly phenomenon of „low-level jets“, which you were introduced to herein.
The 39th Meteorological Calendar 2021 accompanies you through the year with impressive photographs of meteorological phenomena. This calendar accords with the German Meteorological Society’s goal to broaden public knowledge about atmospheric processes. The photographs in wall calendar and postcard calendar are identical. The calendars are available as a wall calendar (DIN A3 landscape format) and a postcard calendar (without texts on the reverse, but with a foldout desk stand instead).
