Synopsis nach oben ↑
This book represents the first comprehensive comparative study of the urban geography of southern Africa. The authors are concerned to convey in text, statistics, maps and photographs an impression of the nature, extent processes and problemes of urbanization in southern Africa. The study is the result of many years’ research on the part of the authors in southern Africa (as from 1960). As well as using the re- sults of their own independent research, they have avaited themselves of many valuable impulses received in discussions with colleagues, urban and regional planning experts and the representatives of public authorities and institutions.
Following the introduction, the processes of urbanization and their causes and consequences in the metropolitan areas and centres of southern Africa are described. The closing chapter attempts to summa- rize current problems in the towns of the emergent industrial state of south Africa and of the developing Third World Countries on its periphery; typical and individual aspects are treated in patterns and models
With this study which contains many informative drawings and photographs, the authors would like to fill a gap in the research spectrum and at the same time stimulate further work on urban and social geography. They are aware that presentations relating to human geography, particularly in areas of unrest in southern Africa give rise to the question of how far science today can and should be "committed". They hold the view that scientific work should endeavour to be objective and allow the reader to draw his own conclusions.
Of interest to: geographers, especially in the field of population and settlement geography, agricultural and economic geography, transportation geography and historical geography; ethnographers, linguists, travel and transportation specialists, politicians, specialists in economic policy, cartographers, historians and their institutions, scientific libraries.
