The present book is a thoroughly revised version of the work, ”Südamerika im Spiegel seiner Städte“ (South America reflected in its cities) by H. Wilhelmy published in 1952. At that time, a phase of scientific research up to the outbreak of the second world war had been completed, which permitted a first synthetic presentation of South American urbanization. Similarly today, urban geographical research in South America has reached a stage which justifies the presentation of new findings in a comprehensive context. When war broke out, that major phase of South American urbanization essentially based on European immigration had come to an end. South America’s large cities had broken away from their traditional constraints and had acquired their first universal characteristics. The policy of industrialization and the accompanying mass exodus from the land initiated a second major phase of urbanization which caused the cities to grow explosively both in size and in population. These developments have changed the face of major cities completely within a span of only forty years.
The authors have therefore set themselves the task of resenting urban research in South America at its present level within the framework of a new synthesis. The first volume, published in 1984, which is devoted to the general problems involved in the origin and development of South American cities, was followed by a second in March 1985, presenting monographs on the urban centres of this continent.
The presentation is not only intended for urban geographers working in or on South America. It has been written just as much for the interested layman who has a private or professional interest in this continent.
