Dans ce dictionnaire riche de quelques 10.000 rubriques, les termes de Phytosociologie tant descriptive et explicative que classificatrice tiennent évidemment la place principale. Cependant, ils sont largement accompagnés de définitions empruntées à l'ensemble des disciplines interconnectées aux sciences de la végétation dont fait partie la Phytosociologie. Le lecteur trouvera donc dans ce dictionnaire, outre ceux de la Phytosociologie et de la synécologie, divers termes concernant la Botanique, la Biologie végétale, l'Ecologie végétale, la Géographie botanique, l'Histoire de la végétation, la Bionomie marine... Il y trouvera aussi les termes utiles issus des Sciences de la Terre comme la géologie, la géomorphologie, la géographie physique, la pédologie...

Le dictionnaire de sociologie et de synécologie végétales, donc en fait de Phytosociologie, est destiné non seulement aux spécialistes en tant qu'aide mémoire, mais aussi à un large public d'amateurs et de débutants.

Schon in den Anfängen der Pflanzensoziologie bemühte man sich um klare Definitionen ihrer Fachtermini, die in kleinen Schriften zusammengefasst und erläutert wurden. In neueren botanischen Wörterbüchern gibt es ebenfalls oft entsprechende Fachworte, wenn auch meist wenig in die Tiefe gehend. Ein Buch, das sich auf Vegetationskunde i. w. S. konzentriert, hat bisher gefehlt. Dafür gibt es jetzt gleich ein sehr umfangreiches Wörterbuch, das mit über 10.000 alphabetisch geordneten Stichworten und Namen weit über die Vegetationskunde hinausreicht. Angesprochen werden auch Allgemeine Botanik, Ökologie, Vegetationsgeschichte und Pflanzengeographie, ebenfalls angewandte Bereiche wie Forstwissenschaft und Naturschutz, dazu wichtige Nachbargebiete wie Bodenkunde, Geologie, Geomorphologie, Bioklimatologie, Landschaftsökologie u. a. Die Begriffe sind oft stark aufgeteilt, so dass man ungeahnt viele Definitionen und Erklärungen findet. Neben kurzen Anmerkungen gibt es auch ausführlichere Darstellungen, z. B. bei Wuchs- und Lebensformen (wenn man sie denn unter "Forme architecturale" bzw. "Formes biologiques" gefunden hat). - Recht ausführlich wird auch auf Syntaxa von den Verbänden aufwärts eingegangen. So findet sich bei jeder Vegetationsklasse auch die gesamte Untergliederung mit Erklärungen zu den einzelnen Namen, Angabe der Autoren, wichtigen Synonymen u. a. Allerdings ist die syntaxonomische Auffassung deutlich vom Verfasser geprägt. - Interessant sind auch viele kürzere bis längere Biographien vieler nicht mehr lebender Vegetationskundler.

So wird jeder Nutzer viele wertvolle Informationen finden, die durch bewunderungswürdige Fleißarbeit zusammengetragen worden sind. Ein Problem für unseren Leserkreis dürfte allerdings teilweise die französische Sprache bilden. Wenn man den Suchbegriff nicht in Französisch kennt, wird das Suchen eher zufällig, abgesehen bei lateinischen Gesellschaftsnamen und solchen aufgenommener Wissenschaftler. Der Wunsch nach einem deutschen Pendant dürfte schwer erfüllbar sein. So wird das vorliegende, recht teure Buch (150 A) erst einmal einzigartig bleiben.

It is not exaggerated to say that this large piece of work summarizes the conceptual universe of sigmatist Phytosociology. In the style of other previous works which present the concepts in the form of a dictionary, this one, which is formed by around 10,000 entries, includes all the terms used in the phytosociological literature from the beginning of the discipline, in the first decades of the XXth century till now. It also includes many concepts usual in related fields such as systematic botany, plant biology, plant ecology, phytogeography, history of the flora and vegetation, geology, geomorphology, geography, soil science, and others. Particular attention is devoted to bioclimatology, plant conservation biology and forestry, as fields closely related to vegetation science. In the area of the sigmatist phytosociology, the floristic, structural, synecological, synsystematical and synnomenclatural aspects are particularly considered, as well as the newly developed field of landscape phytosociology (synphytosociology and geosynphytosociology). Definitions ofWestern European syntaxa are given, on the level of alliance, with concise and accurate indications of their site conditions; many synonyms are also considered. Another interesting aspect is the inclusion of short biographies of (deceased) relevant phytosociologists, which constitute an interesting source of information for many researchers and an important contribution to the historical memory of this field of science. Other interesting contributions are those related directly to the field of geobotany, such as the comments about the different phytosociological schools, the geobotanical concepts concerning the vegetation belts, the biological forms, the indicator values of plants for the site conditions and the naturalistic or ecological value of the plant communities, and many others.

It is really an endless task to comment on all the valuable contents of this dictionary because it has been realized by an extremely experienced author who has spent ten years writing it. Jean-Marie Ge´hu is a well-known author who has accumulated more than fifty years of intense work in the field of Phytosociology. The work is written in French, in a clear, precise and concise style, an example of accuracy. Certainly, this is a relevant contribution, which summarizes the huge experience of a veteran colleague, which deserves a particular attention in the area of vegetation science. It really should neither be missing from the shelves of the specialized libraries nor from the offices of vegetation scientists.
