The present flora treats the pleurocarpous mosses of the Madeira Archipelago,
with notes on the occurrences of the species in the Azores and in the Canary
Islands.
The flora includes 46 genera with 89 species, including one
variety. One genus, Nobregaea Hedenäs and two species, Nobregaea
latinervis Hedenäs and Cyrtohypnum montei Hedenäs are described as
new and the new combinations Cyrtokypnurn atlanticum (Hedenäs) Hedenäs
& C. Sergio and Palustriella falcata (Brid.) Hedenäs are made.
Types of names of taxa described from Macaronesia were checked as far as possible if
relevant for the Madeiran flora, and also for many other Macaronesian
names. All species are thoroughly described and for each species the habitat
and distribution on Madeira Island (c. 32°45'N, 17°00'W) is given as far as is
known.
