Since the oil crisis in 1973 the interest in marine geoscientific
Antarctic research increased. Certainly the most widespread reason for
this continuing interest is the acquisition of knowledge on the
geological history of Antarctica and the surrounding Southern Ocean
over the past 100 m.y. which is essential for a better understanding
of the history of the present Antarctic glaciation, the distinct
circum-Antarctic water masses and of the global paleoclimate.
In this paper we discuss primarily the results of the German and Norwegian multichannel reflection seismic surveys in the Weddell Sea and on the results of the BGR's studies in the Ross Sea, after a short review of the history of multichannel reflection seismic surveys and drilling in Antarctic waters.
