Abstract

Early events of female caste differentiation in a higher termite species, Odontotermes stercorivorus Sjoestedt 1907, are described here for the first time. - Gonads, corpora allata, and prothoracic glands were studied from late embryonic stage to 2nd larval and 1st nymphal instars which all were still subdivided into 6 steps. Differential morphogenesis in prospective reproductives and non-reproductives was observed already shortly after hatching. Temporal patterns of synchronized molt/intermolt mitotic activity were recorded in the internal organs and the epidermis as well.
