Abstract

We used multi-level basket samplers to characterize the microdistribution of macroinvertebrates in the first 30-cm of the hyporheic zone of two small Appalachian mountain streams. In December, macroinvertebrate densities were greater in the bottom level of the basket samplers because of recolonization from the deeper hyporheic zone following a period of drought. During other months, macroinvertebrate abundances generally decreased with depth, although some individuals of most taxa were always present in the bottom baskets. The presence of most taxa in the bottom baskets during much of the year indicates that the hyporheic zone may serve as a refuge from more short-term perturbations such as episodic acidification or spates, as well as from longer-term perturbations such as droughts.
