Abstract

Relationships between the concentration of phosphorus in the water column, and the phosphorus content and species composition of periphyton communities were examined in diked and managed portions of the Florida Everglades. Strong statistically significant correlations were found between the mean dissolved phosphorus concentration in the marsh water column, and the mean phosphorus content and mean relative abundance of eutrophic algae in periphyton communities within Water Conservation Area 2A (WCA-2A). Strong statistically significant correlations were also found between concurrently acquired concentrations of total, dissolved and dissolved inorganic phosphorus in the water column and the mean phosphorus content of periphyton communities when the study area was expanded to include WCA-3A and WCA-3B. Restricting the analysis to hard-water portions of the Everglades permitted clarification of the nutrient ecology of Everglades periphyton.
