Abstract
Comparison with the epaxial muscle-tendon systems of crocodilians with the paravertebral elements in the Australian ankylosaur Minmi paravertebra indicates that the paravertebral elements are sesamoid elements of the epaxial musculature, essentially similar in histology and function, but not anatomy, to ossified tendons. These structures may be associated with reduced dorsal armor and more cursorial habits than among other ankylosaurs.
Kurzfassung
Ein Vergleich zwischen den epaxialen Muskel-Sehnen-Systemen der Krokodile und den paravertebralen Elementen, die bei dem australischen Ankylosaurier Minmi paravertebra gefunden wurden, zeigt, daß die paravertebralen Elemente Sesamoide aus der epaxialen Muskulatur sind. Histologisch und funktionell, jedoch nicht anatomisch, sind sie mit verknöcherten Sehnen vergleichbar. Diese Strukturen stehen vermutlich im Zusammenhang mit der Reduktion des Rückenpanzers und mit einer mehr kursorischen Lebensweise als andere Ankylosaurier.
