Paleoecological and paleoclimatic studies based on palynology of Pliocene and Pleistocene sediments from the Foz do Amazonas Basin, Brazil

Abstract
Pliocene and Pleistocene palynomorphs from a well drilled in the Foz do Amazonas Basin were studied for paleoecological and paleoclimatic interpretation. The taxa recorded are related to the vegetation of the Andean Cordillera and Amazon Plain and allow interpretations of the paleoclimate of the region. The following six palynoecological groups were established: pteridophyte spores, fungal spores, tropical flora, savanna and mountain flora (associated with glacial periods), and dinoflagellates (associated with interglacial periods). A total of five paleoclimatic phases were recognized: phases 1, 3 and 5 related to interglacial periods and phases 2 and 4 to glacial periods.
Kurzfassung
Palynomorphe des Pliozäns und des Pleistozäns aus einer Bohrung im Foz do Amazonas-Becken wurden im Hinblick auf die palökologische und paläoklimatische Interpretationen der Ablagerungen untersucht. Die vorkommenden Arten zeigen Beziehungen sowohl zur Vegetation der Anden als auch zu der des Amazonas-Gebietes und erlauben Aussagen zur paläoklimatischen Entwicklung der Region. Es wurden sechs palynoökologische Gruppen unterschieden: pteridophyte Sporen, Pilzsporen, tropische Flora, Savannen- und Gebirgsflora (assoziiert mit glazialen Phasen) und Dinoflagellaten (assoziiert mit interglazialen Phasen). Fünf paläoklimatische Phasen wurden erkannt, wobei die Phasen 1, 3 und 5 mit interglazialen und die Phasen 2 und 4 mit glazialen Stadien verbunden sind.
