Abstract

A new belemnite species, Parapassaloteuthis francoizbreutae n. sp., is described from lower Toarcian beds (Bifrons Chronozone) of north-western France. It represents the first record of Parapassaloteuthis (Passaloteuthididae, Belemnitina) in the study area after the extinction event and faunal turnover associated with the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE), affecting several passaloteuthidid belemnites. The presence of a new species ascribed to Parapassaloteuthis after the T-OAE suggests the persistence of passaloteuthidids in refuge areas that were only marginally af- fected by anoxia.
