Abstract
A remarkably large-sized nautilid specimen is reported from the Upper Kimmeridgian Nusplingen Plattenkalk. Its evolute coiling strongly recalls that of Ophionautilus Spath, 1927, a genus which has never been recorded before from Upper Jurassic strata. It is described in open nomenclature because of its crushed preservation. The genus is interpreted as a Lazarus taxon that must have survived for c. 15 my in an unknown region. In contrast to numerous records of the smaller-sized nautilid genus Pseudaganides Spath, 1927, which permanently inhabited the Nusplingen lagoon, this sole exotic record is regarded as a nekroplanktonic shell drifting in from the Tethys Sea to the north.
